Dutch artist Anton Corbijn is widely credited as the “visual heart” of Depeche Mode, serving as their de facto creative director since 1986. His brooding, monochrome aesthetic transformed them from “pop lightweights” into “moody megastars,” a contribution lead singer Dave Gahan famously acknowledged during the band’s 2020 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction by stating Corbijn “actually made us look cool”.
